Mother City Queer Projects, more commonly known as MCQP, are putting on their 17th Annual Themed Costume party. MCQP was started in 1994 to honour their acknowledgement of Gay rights within the new South African constitution. Their annual Costume Party is the main event on their calendar and is the flagship of their projects. The Themed Costume Party, culminates all the other activities and awareness campaigns. In its 16 years of existence it has been termed as “Africa’s biggest queer bash”.

So what’s to be expected at the event?

This year’s event is going to be the biggest and best event MCQP has ever put on. Ian McMahon, director of MCQP, said that “As well as hosting the best ever World Cup in our brand new perlemoen-shaped stadium, we also celebrate 150 years of flower sales at the Adderley street flower sellers market and commemorate the 40th anniversary of the half a million people who descended on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel, New York for the Woodstock Festival – so there’s lots to feel flowery about. And what better way to celebrate than a trip down memory lane to the sixties theme, Summer of Love.”

The event takes place in the Cape Town stadium in Greenpoint on Saturday 18th December. The theme of this year’s event is Flower Power. As mentioned above by McMahon it is to commemorate not just flower sales in Adderly Street, but the hosting of the World Cup and the 40th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival. It is going to be a very colourful event with people dressing up in all types of costumes. From tye dyed clothing to psychedelic style, there is something for everyone. The event will feature an amazing 8 dance floors with the likes of Flash Republic, SILO (PsynOpticz), Psy GUY (Organik) and TUNE RAIDER (Nutek) entertaining the crowds.

With Sponsors such as: Mercedes-Benz Century CIty, Absolut Vodka, Cape Town Tourism, Don Julio Tequila, Gearhouse SA, Jagermeister, Smirnoff etc. This event is going to be a spectacle not to be missed. This is the first event of this type at the Cape Town Stadium since the Soccer World Cup.
