The Goldenfish Sushi Restaurant

The Goldenfish in Table View is a relatively new sushi venue that opened up late last year taking over the Mama Roma premises. With a half view of the ocean, depending on where you sit, and a full view of your sushi chefs the location is perfect. Although it is not wheelchair or pram friendly (unless you have a strong individual to help you), it is child friendly and if you go during the day the staff are generally happy to chase around and entertain your toddler (lest they are destructive or prone to violent tantrums).

Anytime you find yourself craving sushi until your stomach pops, this is the place to visit. With a daily R109 buffet and not limit as to how long you may sit there (though you may not leave and come back) you can gobble up as much fishy goodness as your stomach capacity will allow.

We arrived somewhat early (as they were opening) and as a result were allowed to put in requests to the very friendly (though camera shy) staff. Who were very happy to oblige, though I did have to beg and plead a little for them to whip out the prawns as they were on a salmon mission. My partner in crime being all too happy about this as she consumed one salmon rose after the other.

What’s also great is that if you aren’t much of a sushi fan but do have a sushi loving partner you are able to request non fishy sushi (made up of vegetables, cream cheese etc…)

The seating and layout of the restaurant is nicely set out, you have your evening dining section that can cater for booking little larger parties, your cordoned off bar and smoking section for those nicotine lovers who simply can’t sit through a meal without their dose (can you tell i’m not a fan?). The veranda is perfect for the warmer afternoons as the windows open up to let in the fresh sea breeze, and then of course you have the best spot in the house, right up around the conveyer belt.

I won’t say it’s the best sushi around, being trained by a Korean chef, I have come to know a thing or two but they are definitely high up on my recommendations list. They are certainly creative when it comes to their options, one of the more interesting ones that caught my attention was the peanut butter tuna… yes, I also scrunched up my nose a little, and I am sure many won’t think that peanut butter belongs on fish but I suggest that if you’re up for something deliciously different then go for it.

I was there on Saturday – it was my first time eating sushi. I have never had such a wonderful time before. The staff were so friendly, the atmosphere was lovely and the company I was with was awesome. Thanks Golden Fish for a wonderful experience!!

We were there last night, 11 Sept 2011.For starters I ordered tempura chicken. I got overcooked CRUMBED chicken pieces (DEFINITELY not tempura batter). Menu stated 4 pieces – I got 3 pieces. My husband had asalmon california rolls which were fine. Mains: The “Sesame Crispy Beef” my husband ordered seemed to have been prepared in their sweet & sour sauce – (dissapointing) and I had the lamb chops and chicken satay combo. The lamb chops were SO TOUGH I could not cut the chops to eat, there was so much sinew. They did not resemble a nicely cut chop, and in the centre there was a piece of meat popping out and the edges were curled up with the amount of sinew. The satay sauce was colder than room temperature so the oil was drifting on top! While we were still eating from approx 21h00 they started carrying their waste dustbins (from sushi area) through the restaurant, right past us, so we got the whiffs of waste. Was so off-putting! I asked for the manager on duty and he offered us a free bowtie and ice-cream to compensate for the “inconvenience”. Needless to say, we declined, paid the full bill (R285) and I did never got the 2 chops…. will NEVER support them again. Have been there 3 times before and it was ok. Have they changed management/chef’s???? Terrible food.

I am impressed with the sushi special although i would prefer that the salmon be cut a bit thicker as in the salmon roses you don’t really taste the salmon when it is so thin. If that can be done you guys will see me more often….please

Just for the record the restaurant is wheelchair friendly – the lift is about 10m along the downstairs patio area outside the takeaway places and works.
The sushi has to be some of the best I’ve tasted and has a very good range.
And let’s be honest the R109 (Sunday to Thursday) and R129 (Friday and Saturday) eat as much as you want makes it very good value for money (the cocktails are also to be recommended).

We celebrated a friend’s birthday at this restaurant last night, and enjoyed the sushi. However, while we were having dessert and coffee, and there were only a few people left still dining, some bright spark on staff took the opportunity to wheel through a refuse bin which was absolutely reeking – and filled the entire area with the most horrible smell. We spent almost R1000 there, and will NOT be returning…….

What a dissapointment…… The sushi was let down by the cheap and nasty soy sauce that accompanied it. The pecan nut chicken was terrible – I think I need to send them a recipe. The sweet and sour pork was mediocre and the sizzling beef was burned beyond recognition. At over R200 per person I left feeling like I have been raped. Do yourself (and your wallet) a favour and don’t go there
