Comedian and actor, Siv Ngesi, stars in his very own stand up comedy show Dekaf. The show starts off its national tour in Cape Town in March before on to Johannesburg and Durban in April. Dekaf is a comedy in which Siv talks about how black people, think like whites. The irony about the whole show is that it is being told by a black guy who sounds white.
Siv is a 25year old actor who was born Gugulethu, Cape Town. He was a natural born actor and at the age of 10, toured with Les Miserables, playing the role of ‘Gavroshe’. Since then he has starred in many theatres performances, TV shows and movies. Some of these include: League of Glory, 24, Sizwe Banzi is dead and Butlers and Brandy. His most recent stage performance is Dekaf which he co-wrote with South African actor, director and comedian, David Newton.
Dekaf is a show which Siv explores the depths of a black man living in the 21st century. It is not a show which takes the piss of apartheid but on the other hand rather takes the piss of black man who is raised in the suburbs, went to a private school, dates white women and listens to Josh Groban!
The show debuted in 2009 at the Grahamstown Arts Festival but it was not until last year that I managed to watch it. Without giving too much away, I have never laughed at black satire as much as I did at this show. The comments, mannerisms and shear ignorance sets this show heads above the rest. All I can say is that if I had known about the show in its debut year, I would have definitely watched it in 2009, 2010 and you can be as sure as hell that I’m gonna get myself to the Baxter to watch it again this year! Rumour has it that the show has been improved significantly. I can’t wait!
If you looking for a good laugh and Trevor Noah’s “The Daywalker” just isn’t cutting it for you, then I suggest you put on your loudest laugh and get down to the Baxter, Gold Reef City or Krakatoa and watch a class act in action.
