I have been writing this review over a span of about 3 weeks, constantly adding to it, tweaking it, correcting my horrid English and all because I was struggling to describe exactly how awesome these leggings are. So here goes…
The full length leggings from Under Armour are a piece of technical genius. Incredibly difficult to get on, (albeit only at first) incredibly annoying (again, only at first) to keep on, but what a piece of clothing! The technology behind the ‘Energy Pant’ itself is quite interesting. Under Armour claim that wearing the ‘Recovery Pant’ will improve recovery time by 56%, reduce fatigue by 29% and make you superman, err, women, umm, super-it. Here is what they have to say about them;
Wear after games or workouts to re-energize your body. Strategic Compression promotes muscle repair by targeting & stabilizing muscles. Designed to reduce swelling, soreness time & fatigue. Armour®Stretch improves mobility and accelerates dry time with lightweight fabrics built in a 4-way stretch. Built with Flatlock Seams that feel smooth against the skin and prevent chafing. 30+ UPF protects your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and inhibits premature aging. 81% Polyester / 19% Elastane.
It is a difficult thing to wrap your head around as a guy – jumping into full length tights feels very odd. Transvestite-like almost. Most of the compression/performance gear you get from Under Armour requires a tight fit in order for the garment to work effectively. This required me to create a special manoeuvre to get them on, dubbed the ‘Jump ‘n Tug’ you start by sliding on each foot, pulling them up over your calves. Once they are around your knees – jump high into the air while tugging the rest of the material up around your waist.
The ‘Jump ‘n Tug’ does get easier the more you do it, and after a week or so you will instantly have respect for any woman who wears stockings. I found that after long periods of wearing them (especially if you are up and down a lot) they creep down a little but other than that they are extremely comfortable.
I first tested them after a hockey game and even after the second day, which is when stiffness hits hardest, I had no problems. Nothing! I thought maybe it was because my game was not hard enough but even after an hour and half 5-setter on the squash court, nothing! I have found the recovery time after wearing the Under Armour Recharge leggings to be noticeably shortened. I had to push my body really hard in order to start feeling the effects of the lactic acid build up in my muscles, a week of daily squash was enough to start feeling the glutes. Extraordinary to find that a simple garment has the ability to remove stiffness and help you recover so quickly!
The leggings are appropriate for almost everyone who is active, from gymsters to triathletes – a phenomenal bit of kit you simply have to have. They are available for around R800.00 so whilst not exactly cheap, they are proving to be well worth the money! They do take a while to get used to, but you will want to stick with it. Your muscles will thank you!
